Institute for Humanities Research

Humanities. The word brings to mind history, art, language, literature, philosophy and religion – the traditional humanities fields. But in the 21st century, the humanities are playing an increasingly vital role in society by tackling the social, cultural, technological and scientific changes facing the world.

The Institute for Humanities Research (IHR) generates and supports transformative, transdisciplinary, collaborative and socially engaged humanities scholarship that contributes to the analysis and resolution of the world’s many challenges. Our scholars explore such issues and concepts as sustainability, human origins, immigration and natural disasters and utilize historical, philosophical and creative perspectives to achieve a deeper understanding of their causes, effects and cultural meanings.

Major programs in the institute include the IHR Fellow Program, the IHR Competitive Seed Grant Program, Research Clusters, the IHR Annual Distinguished Lecturer, the annual IHR Transdisciplinary Book Award and a wide range of events and thought-provoking research workshops.
