Obesity Solutions Initiative

The U.S. Surgeon General reports two-thirds of American adults and nearly one in three children are overweight or obese. The Obesity Solutions Initiative is a transdisciplinary project in partnership with Mayo Clinic, ASU researchers and other universities, communities, businesses and government organizations to identify, test and share innovative ways of addressing obesity.

The initiative is headed by co-director and President's Professor Alexandra Brewis Slade in ASU's School of Human Evolution and Social Change  and Mayo Clinic professor Dr. James Levine. Projects range from research on body weight regulation and gut microorganisms by Professor Rosa Krajmalnik-Brown in the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment and the science of exercise by Professor Glenn Gaesser in the School of Nutrition and Health Promotion to efforts in the community to support needs of homeless youth, the healthy campus project and redesiging public libraries as spaces to teach children about health.
