An advocate for Indigenous genomic and data sovereignty
Krystal Tsosie (Diné/Navajo Nation) is a co-founder of the first U.S. Indigenous-led biobank, a 501(c)3 nonprofit research institution called the Native BioData Consortium.
Her research and educational endeavors on ethical engagement with Indigenous communities have received international media attention in such outlets as The New York Times, PBS NOVA, Washington Post, NPR, The Atlantic, Forbes and The Boston Globe, among others.
A Nobel Prize winner with students in mind
Leland Hartwell, a professor in the School of Life Sciences, has enjoyed an expansive academic career that includes a Nobel Prize win, and his work has left a legacy in multiple research areas — from yeast cells to cancer therapies.
Now, Hartwell is leading students in a unique research experience through the Online Undergraduate Research Scholars (OURS) program.
A MacArthur Fellow and renowned water researcher
An expert on water insecurity, anthropologist Amber Wutich has two decades of community-based fieldwork exploring how people cope and respond, individually and collectively, to extremely water-scarce conditions.
She received the 2025 Big 12 Conference’s Faculty of the Year Award and was selected as a 2023 MacArthur Fellow, among other awards. Additionaly, she has raised $80 million in research funds from NSF, USDA, USACE, the State of Arizona and other funders.
An ecologist by sea, air and satellite
Greg Asner is an internationally recognized ecologist who uses remote sensing to explore and preserve biodiversity on earth. He is currently mapping land biodiversity and the health of the world's coral reefs from the sea, air and satellites.
Asner is a recipient of multiple scientific and sustainability awards and is a member of the National Academy of Sciences.
